Haven't you ever had time you wanted to get away from it all? In March/April 1978, www.motherearthnews.com published a story about a couple who bought McLeod's Island a 90-acre island off the coast of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada. They have a few animals, spend very little on groceries, and are pretty well sustained by the island itself. Although it does present them with some challenges: "The sea, you know, is not called "restless" for nothing. A glass-smooth bay (as we've learned so well!) can churn-sometimes seemingly in seconds-into a windswept chaos of currents and combers. We've also seen that same bay (the one in which our island is located) thaw and then completely refreeze in just hours on a single December day. Winters up here can be especially variable. Continual spring-like thaws throughout 1976's cold season, for instance, kept our bay filled with slushy ice that was too thick to push a boat through ... but too dangerous for even a fox to walk on. We were marooned for three full months, from the first of January until the end of March. Last winter's record cold snap, on the other hand, filled the bay so solidly with pack ice that we could hike back and forth to the mainland for our mail and toboggan loads of supplies any time we wanted."For some of us, we find the Internet gives us the freedom to be able to work and live almost any place we want to. These people didn't have that luxury. I use the past tense as I can't find any current information about them. Who knows? Maybe the tide swept the out to sea.Life is full of sacrifices. Some are just more dear than others. Still, I don't think buying an island is in my future. You can read the whole article here.http://www.motherearthnews.com/library/1978_March_April/We_Homesteaded_an_Island
Thanks for visiting and finding my article. What follows is information that I have pulled together from several sources. I hope you find it both interesting and helpful.Who makes the best quality detailing products or where can I get professional quality detailing products for my own car seems to be what a lot of people are asking. You may be able to get the best products on the market or the same products that auto detailers and the serious hobbyists use. It is quite well known that if you intend to win auto show competitions you need the best quality detailing products to get that mirror finish. Young men also know that if their car is not looking at its best, their chances of getting a date will be tough. No one wants to go out with someone with a dirty car. For most people, their car is a reflection of themselves and are very particular of its appearance.Do it yourselfers have asked if there is a special product they can use on their car to make their baby shine. You can find some excellent products online and they will ship them direct to you. One line of products was the American Shine Product Line of auto detail products. It is easy to order online and it comes within a week. The 'Gift Pack,' the Tire Dressing and Carnauba Liquid Wax are all good. After following the instructions, the results were great. The Rubber and Tire Dressing had good shine, but did not have the stickiness, which would attract dirt or blowing dust. The Carnauba Liquid wax was not difficult to use and gave a good shine, but you must make sure the surface has been properly cleaned first. To insure a proper wash, we used carnauba car wash soap, which is recommended.Although these products are usually made for street rods, motorcycles and customs, these products also worked great on a motor home and a 4-door maroon Ford with mild oxidation. The results were all on their website stating they were pleased with the shine. I want to thank you for visiting. Go ahead and look around for additional tips and information.
Regular brake inspections are an essential part of good automotive maintenance that can save you money and keep your car from wrapping itself around the first tree out of your driveway. Make sure that your brakes and rotors are receiving the proper maintenance by following the steps outlined. Your safety as well as that of your passengers, pedestrians, and other drivers is at stake.1. Time for a free inspection. Many local brake shops as well as national brake repair chains offer customers free brake inspections at no obligation to you. The inspection typically includes the following steps:
Bouncing down the road one day it occurs to you that things are just not what they should be. The road you are riding on is as smooth as glass, yet your car is jostling up and down like nobodys business. You enter an upcoming curve in the road and quickly learn that the control you had over your car was lost just moments before. Suddenly, the vehicle careens off the road, goes down through a ditch and up an embankment before coming to rest against a fence adjacent to Tonys garage. You are in luck: you arent dead and your car is at Tonys, who happens to be your favorite mechanic.Yes this story is ridiculous, exceedingly so. All joking aside, your shock absorbers [or struts in the case of some cars] plays a vital part in your vehicles suspension system. When certain signs of wear and tear become apparent, you must replace your shocks or otherwise you can put yourself in danger and/or damage your car.A shock absorber works by damping the compression and extension of the vehicle's suspension springs to prevent ongoing movement. Shocks work to diminish road impact, prevent excessive bounce back, reduce sway, and improve general road handling. When your shocks are functioning properly your vehicle grips to the road whether you are braking, negotiating a curve in the road, driving on uneven roads, or experiencing powerful side winds. When worn out, shocks can play a part in you losing control of your car putting you and everyone else in harms way. How often should you replace your shocks? One manufacturer suggests no less than once every 50,000 miles, but that depends on whether you frequently drive on coarse roads [in this case it will need to occur sooner] or it could even be much later if you do mostly local driving, the roads are well maintained, etc. There is a simple test you can perform on your car to establish whether your shocks need replacing. It isnt absolute, therefore you may want to take your vehicle to a garage to make certain:Take hold of a corner of your vehicles bumper.Press down on the bumper with all of your strength and then let go.Your shocks are probably okay if the bumper drops down and returns in place without rebounding again. Slight movement is okay, but if it continually moves, then that particular shock is no longer effective. Duplicate the test on the remaining three corners of your vehicle.Other telltale signs of shock wear can be observed through leakage [although a leak is not always indicative of wear] and by observing tire wear patterns. Finally, if you are simply experiencing motion sickness every time you go for a ride, then that can be the best indicator that your shocks or struts need replacing. No kidding here!
Post 1900s, the aftermarket for cars wheels and rims has become huge. Everyone wants to customize their car with the latest and trendiest set of wheels. You car can look more trendy within minutes of installing the latest set of custom wheels and rims. But selecting the right one is extremely important.Types of custom wheels and rimsThere are many different types of wheels and rims that you can find in the market. But not every one of them is designed for your car. You can get everything from the basic 5 spoke ally wheels to the more advanced chrome spinning wheels, which are a fad nowadays.Appearance Alloy and SteelIf you are just concerned about the appearance, then select the custom wheels and rims that you feel will suit your car the best. But if you are looking at racing, then choose an ally wheel as it is much lighter and will give your car the power it desires. Steel rims are much heavier and will slow down your vehicle. Alloy is also good for city traffic and prevents over heating of the brake system.Installing larger than factory custom wheels and rims will give your car or SUV a sporty look. Find a one that matches the bolt pattern of the car. Ask the sales person at the store to choose the right offset for your vehicle. If this is not correct it will lead to problems in handling and steering of the vehicle.PricingIf you pay less, you will end up compromising on quality. If you go for slightly expensive wheels and rims, then you will get the look as well as the quality that you want. In comparison to brick and mortar stores, prices at the online stores are very less. The advantage of buying wheels and rims at the brick and mortar stores is that you can see, touch and have a feel of your custom wheels and rims.It is not hard to choose the right wheel and rim for your car if you are know what you want and aware of the choices available.
